Early Years at St. Michael’s

At St. Michael’s Church of England Primary Academy, we recognise the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) as a crucial period in a child’s development. It is during these formative years that the foundations for future learning, wellbeing, and success are laid. Our aim is for every child who enters our EYFS setting to grow emotionally, physically, verbally, and cognitively, while developing a lifelong love of learning.
We are passionate about ensuring that every child succeeds. By getting to know each child as an individual and understanding their unique starting points, we are able to tailor our curriculum to meet their needs and unlock their full potential. Our ambitious and engaging curriculum is rooted in the seven areas of learning outlined in the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, and is enriched by guidance from Development Matters and Birth to 5 Matters.
The Importance of Play
At St. Michael’s, we believe that play is not only central to early childhood but essential to it. Play is how children explore, discover, and make sense of the world around them. It supports the development of language, social skills, creativity, and problem-solving. Research highlights that high-quality play experiences are directly linked to improved cognitive, emotional, and social outcomes. Through play, children develop resilience, independence, and a sense of agency – all of which are vital for lifelong learning.
Our learning environments are carefully designed to promote purposeful play, both indoors and outdoors. Children are given uninterrupted time to explore, practise, and extend their learning through continuous and enhanced provision. Adults act as facilitators of learning, engaging in high-quality interactions that move learning forward through modelling, questioning, and encouragement.
Curriculum and Implementation
Our EYFS curriculum is designed to be progressive, inclusive, and rooted in our community. Through enquiry-based learning, high-quality texts, and meaningful experiences, children develop a deep understanding of the world around them. Daily teaching of phonics through the Sound! Start Phonics programme and early mathematics through Mastering Number ensures that children build strong foundations in literacy and numeracy.
We use the Talk for Writing approach to develop children’s spoken language, vocabulary, and storytelling skills, which in turn supports their early writing. A love of reading is fostered through daily story time and access to a wide range of high-quality texts in our inviting reading areas.
Learning Environment
Our EYFS environment is inclusive, stimulating, and designed to promote independence. Learning areas are clearly defined and regularly adapted to reflect children’s interests and developmental needs. Practitioners enhance these spaces with rich vocabulary and resources that spark curiosity and deepen learning.
Assessment and Impact
Assessment in EYFS is ongoing and rooted in meaningful interactions and observations. Practitioners use their knowledge of child development, alongside guidance from Development Matters and Birth to 5 Matters, to ensure that each child receives the support they need. Learning Journeys capture key moments, achievements, and experiences, and are shared with families to celebrate progress.
By the end of Reception, our children are confident, articulate, and ready for the next stage of their education. They leave EYFS with a strong sense of self, a love of learning, and the essential knowledge and skills needed to thrive in Key Stage One and beyond.
