Physical Education

Vision
At St. Michael’s, we are committed to nurturing happy, healthy, and mindful individuals. Through active participation in engaging PE lessons, involvement in school life, and making informed lifestyle choices, we empower children to care for both body and mind—laying the foundation for a lifelong commitment to well-being.

Intent
We recognise that access to sporting opportunities varies across our communities. In areas like Handsworth, where resources can be scarce, our PE curriculum steps up. It is designed not only to deliver high-quality physical education, but also to bridge the gap by providing inclusive extracurricular and competitive sporting opportunities for all our pupils.

PE at St. Michael’s is not just about physical activity—it’s a vehicle for growth. We aim to:

  • Broaden learning beyond the classroom through a bespoke curriculum tailored to our pupils’ needs
  • Build physical competence, resilience, independence, and teamwork through diverse activities
  • Inspire a lasting love for movement and healthy living

With the support of our specialist PE coach, teachers help children explore a wide range of sports and physical challenges—from gymnastics to invasion games—ensuring every child builds fundamental movement skills and cognitive development in equal measure.

We want our pupils to:

  • Compete with themselves and others with confidence and fairness
  • Appreciate the value of personal bests, respectful competition, and teamwork
  • Learn to swim, develop basic survival skills in water, and understand what it means to lead an active, healthy lifestyle

Our use of the complete PPPE curriculum places wellbeing and physical development at its heart. It encourages agility, coordination, critical thinking, balance, and core values such as fairness, respect, and perseverance.

Implementation
Pupils enjoy two hours of dedicated PE each week and wear their PE kit on lesson days to maximise active time. The curriculum spans:

  • Gymnastics
  • Games
  • Athletics
  • Multi-skills and fundamentals
  • Netball/Basketball
  • Tennis
  • Invasion games
  • Swimming

Physical education is woven into school life beyond lessons. We compete in local tournaments and host inter-school events, promoting sportsmanship and pride. A wide range of termly extracurricular clubs—such as yoga, football, cycling, and dodgeball—further enrich our offer. These are fully funded by the school and led by experienced sports coaches, ensuring all pupils can try something new and feel included.

Through sport, we teach more than movement—we foster goal-setting, self-awareness, and a positive mindset. Our approach gives pupils the confidence to grow as individuals and take ownership of their own health and happiness.

Our Commitment to Growth
Our ambitions for the future of Sport and PE (2025/26 to 2026/27) include:

  1. Achieving the School Games Silver Award to reflect our dedication to outstanding sport provision
  2. Increasing participation in inter-school competitions by becoming an active partner in local sport networks
  3. Giving pupils opportunities to attend live professional sports events to inspire and broaden horizons
  4. Expanding our extra-curricular offer to include diverse, high-quality clubs for every interest
  5. Establishing partnerships with clubs across Birmingham to help more children access sport outside of school
